ADIRONDACK HP SERIES: Hurricane Mountain, Nun-da-ga-o Ridge and "The Crows"

EVENT ORGANIZER: Julie Moran / Hiking Mates CHALLENGE. Contact me here: jmmoran @ nycap.rr.com, Mobile [masked]. Please feel free to email me your thoughts about this trip. Be sure to review all information below prior to your attendance. ESSENTIAL TRIP DETAILS: Difficulty: 11.0 Miles, 3,383 Feet ASL Climb; at 1.5 miles / hour, this is about a 7-1/2-hour hike. CLICK HERE: Google map directions from the meetup location to the CAR SPOT: Hurricane Mountain Road / Crows trailhead, east of Keene NY; and the Hurricane Mountain trailhead along Route 9N, west of Elizabethtown, NY. Longest Estimated Drive Time From Meetup: 2 hours, 14 minutes; estimated distance, 116 miles ONE WAY. Car Spot Time: 9:30 a.m. Hike Start: 9:45 a.m. (Estimated Return (No Stops): 7:30 p.m. ESSENTIALS TO BRING: Flash light AND head lamp, food / snacks / at least three bottles of water, first aid items and sunscreen. Wear multiple layers of synthetic materials for warmth; consider bringing charcoal warmers for fingers and toes. Guard against black flies -- bring and apply ample amounts of repellent and consider head netting -- that should do the trick! The final approach to the Hurricane Mountain fire tower summit, with Lake Champlain in the background. The firetower was saved just this spring from being torn down by the state government. IMPORTANT UPDATES (04/27/2010 11:30 am): This is an event cross-posted with Hudson Valley Hikers (HVH); and also the Central NY Adirondack Adventure Group (CNYAAG). The Clifton Park meetup location and time is the Fire Road Park and Ride, pushed the time back 30 minutes to better coordinate our meetup with our downstate and central NY colleagues. Here's an Adirondack High Peaks favorite, Hurricane Mountain ... and a visit to the beautiful Nun-da-ga-o Ridge along with other minor nearby peaks that include Big Crow and Little Crow mountains. I've climbed Hurricane Mountain several times, given its short route to unforgettable Adirondacks High Peaks views to the south, and the Champlain Valley to the east. Here's my chance -- and yours -- to check out the well known and beautiful Nun-da-ga-o Ridge routes through the Hurricane Mountain Wilderness to the north. The Nun-da-ga-o Ridge, formerly known as the "Soda Range," lies just east of the village of Keene, NY, and just west of the High Peaks of the Adirondacks. The "trail" is unmarked and unmaintained, but is easy to follow, and provides nearly continuous views from open rocks back toward the High Peaks. Pray for great weather! Please review ALL the links and especially the trip planner below -- be sure to click the last link at the bottom of the trip planner ("Hurricane and Nun-da-ga-o Ridge") to get the right hike (there are at least five ways to hike Hurricane Mountain). We decide as a group which end of the hike we will spot cars, because there are a couple of trip versions which may be shorter; however, the "official trailhead" will be the traditional Hurricane Mountain trailhead along State Route 9N, west of Elizabethtown.
